Volleyball Drills

In any sport, practice is the only way to sharpen your individual game and the way your team game, or the way your team interacts during the competition. In order to make practice and your game successful, you have to warm-up. Volleyball players can warm-up their muscles by simply running or they can warm-up while running volleyball drills. Having players go through volleyball drills such as ball control drills, for example, warms up muscles while practicing ball control. One way to incorporate jogging and ball control drills is having players line up at one end and start jogging lightly while they pass to themselves with forearm passing. The warm-up can be kept interesting by measuring speed or the least amount of passes from one end to the other.

Volleyball Passing Drills

There are various volleyball drills to enhance passing skills. Most passing drills focus on movement while passing successfully to your teammate. In the Slide Step Passing drill, there is a passer and two tossers who each have a volleyball to toss to the passer. The drill starts with the passer in front of one tosser. The tosser tosses the ball to the passer who passes the ball back to the tosser. The passer then steps to the side so that passer is across the other tosser. In essence, the passer moves to the left then the right passing continuously at the same time each time a ball is tossed. Front to Back Passing requires a tosser and a passer who are directly across from each other. First the ball is tossed to the passer. The passer passes the ball and then steps forward to touch the tosser’s foot. The passer steps back to the starting point and immediately has to pass again. This movement is repeated.

Fun Volleyball Drills

In order to make practice fun and not so monotonous, coaches need to change up volleyball drills to keep players fresh. One fun drill does not focus on hitting the ball as do many of the volleyball drills out there. The drill known as Hit the Deck strengthens skills other than hitting the ball. In this volleyball drill, players sharpen their dropping and hitting the floor skills. This exercise helps them lose their fear and hesitation to drop, a very important skill in the game of volleyball. The drill starts with players jogging in place. The coach then blows a whistle or yells “Hit the Deck”. At that point the players drop to the floor. The drill is that simple, but can be made more competitive by making timing an issue. For example, the last player on the ground is out of the game. The last player left is the quickest one to hit the deck.
