ATP Tennis
ATP tennis stands for the Association of Tennis Professionals, and is the men's professional tennis players' association. ATP tennis association was formed in 1972, and often takes the side of the players. Most notably, in 1988, the ATP tennis association proclaimed that they were going to take over the U.S. open because the players weren't allowed full access to some of the facilities. Since then, the ATP tennis hasn't had to throw its weight around- the name now is enough. The founder had a vision that is still in place today: that tennis and some of the major decisions should still revolve around the players, but, also that there are amazing marketing and promotion outlets in the media market for the game.
One of the reasons that ATP made such a name for itself was because they began their own tour, for which they keep rankings. For the first year, the players had a major role in the tour. This carried with it some responsibility, as the players then also had the responsibility of maintaining the profitability of their joint endeavor with many of the heads of the other tournaments. Within weeks after the ATP tennis associations proclamation, eighty-five of the top one-hundred ranked players showed their support in the form of signed letters. Since then the ATP Tennis association began, they have had a new logo that has only furthered to strengthen the ATP tennis message and solidify their solidarity.
Atp Tennis Tour
The APT tennis tour still maintains the traditions of relying strongly on the players. However, more strides still need to be made in a women's tournament of the same caliber.
Atp Tennis Website
The ATP tennis website (ATPtennis.com)proclaims that it is the official website for men's tennis. It includes a rule book in pdf format. It earns the name "official" because the chairmen of the ATP tennis association rank all the male players, and are influential in almost all of the tournaments. The sheer fact that this is many of these men's full time jobs points to the importance of the ATP tennis association. Half of the front web page is taken up with advertisements, mostly from Nike, showing how commercialism has seeped into, but not yet quite corrupted, almost every sport. This organization has the power to veritably determine what players should be earning in relation to one another. It also allows the public to see how the players will likely be seeded for the tournament.
